effigy addendum
Followup from http://denshi.livejournal.com/465303.html, if you missed it.

Tonja had the neat idea to delegate construction of the wedges out to various theme camps that volunteer to build as a group, then allow them to decorate them to taste. A DaFT member could oversee to ensure that they are built to spec, are still structurally sound, and provide instruction as needed. Then theme camps would be invested by having built their slice of the structure. I like this because it doesn't break any delegation model, you just work with teams that already selected their co-workers.

Also from Tonja was the idea to scrape up the ashes after the burn and use them for community gardens, as opposed to just dumping it. She's got a lot of cool plans for the EG this year, and I like this one too.

I've been having a lot of conversations with two kinds of people lately: pro lighting designers (LEDs, lasers) and people who want to make lighting for 1) the effigy and 2) their own house, but don't have the skills to do so. I'd like to have some structured warehouse nights (or maybe at my or other houses) where one or more pros instruct people on assembly of completed designs -- the effigy would entail a lot of (identical?) repeated controller-driven lighting rigs, and we'd have a good way to complete several of them each night. I also just really like finding ways to help Flipsiders share skills. And then, because we can't burn the lighting rigs, people can either take home what they made, or donate them to another art project.

More later, still processing other ideas. I hope we get to do this -- I'm having a blast, and everyone I talk to about it volunteers gear, time, or new cool ideas. I love being a community of people who are brilliant on so many different axes.

I looked into getting patches, top hats, and monocles in bulk. DaFT uniforms...

one of my long-time pipe dreams is to make soap from the ashes of a main burn - to be distributed at the next year's event. (only available in patchouli scent, made from real hippies) the burn would have to be ultra clean in order for me to feel comfortable doing this...so i pretty much wrote off the idea. of course i could use ashes from another fire, but i'm partial to the concept of connectedness to the effigy and coming full circle...
keep up the good work!

I believe that this burn pile would be composed entirely of wood ashes, organic paint ashes, and zinc-coated steel nails and screws. Pretty clean.

Uhm... most wood today is treated with chemicals for construction. I wouldn't dump it on my garden and I surely wouldn't rub it on my skin...

We don't use pressure-treated wood, that's the source of the chemicals. However, as Charlie points out below, the burn site is already contaminated from the Chalice burn last year.

Organic paint ashes?
I HAve been growing herbs and flowers since '90. I would never use the residue of burning art in gardens.
Last year's effigy burned copper wires with plastic insulation which produced dioxins. This means the current firepit is contaminated with dioxins.

Good point, I didn't think about last year's burn.
